There is some disagreement between us as to the origins of our trip. A friend of ours, her partner and child, the same age as Ben, took themselves off on an extended trip to South Africa, and Clare’s contention is that we simply felt that if they could do it, so could we.
At about the same time, Clare went into hospital with pregnancy complications. She was six months into her second pregnancy, haemorrhaging badly and at risk of further haemorrhaging. For this reason, she needed to remain in hospital for the remainder of her pregnancy with blood on standby for transfusion if necessary. This was a difficult time for us as a family, and we needed a dream. That dream was to take our family away for an extended foreign trip before our children (we did not know at that time that Jack would be a boy) started school. Dream became concept. Concept became Plan. And for two and a half years, the plan developed to reality.
