The Roman city of Pompei has exceeded all my expectations. Perfectly straight stone roads intersected with narrower streets. Surprises tucked away behind inconspicuous openings, and helpful curators ready to offer additional information.
It rained all day, and perhaps that helped – we had the city almost to ourselves. There were times when we thought that there were more staff than visitors.
At the end of the day we were all wet and tired.
Poor Meg had been left in the van for over four hours. I took her for a walk along the mean streets of modern Pompei. Prostitutes cluster around the entrance to Carrefour, and as we passed one of the shouted out to me “Bella carne”, or was she calling “Bella cane” to Meg? I’ll never know for sure!
